The order was placed with the Tachikawa Hikoki Kabushiki Kaisha factory, where they built three prototypes, two of which were flown. After the war, they were transported to the USA and tested. The disadvantage of the all-wooden structure was insufficient strength. This problem had already been encountered by the designers of the parent factory Nakajima with the Ki-84-II version. In Tachikawa, the task was entrusted to Eng. Moriyuki Nakagawa and Eng. Shinagawa, both designers traveled to Burma, where they examined the structure of the downed DH.98 Mosquito. After their return, they began the all-wooden structure of the Ki-106.
